Women of the depicted group undressed for the viewer while the same work presents their society as one that represses women. The two moves need each other: the confinement supplies the frisson and the exposure supplies the reward, so the audience gets to disapprove and to look at the same time. The tell is a double standard inside one frame, where the men of the same culture stay covered.
