Establishing verdict

The work's own voice passing judgement on a people or place before any character has acted: an opening crawl, a narrator, a title card, a theme song. Because it arrives first and belongs to nobody in the story, it reads as setting rather than opinion, and the audience is asked to accept it as the ground the plot stands on.
