- The Egyptian court is a nest of schemers: Pothinus plots against the throne, Cleopatra has her nurse Ftatateeta cut him down in secret, and the Alexandrian populace becomes a rioting mob storming the palace, while the Roman characters supply wisdom and restraint. Cleopatra herself, played by the British Vivien Leigh, is a kittenish teenager who must be taught by Caesar how to rule.
