- Cleopatra is played as the duplicitous Eastern seductress: she prowls her own court disguised as the dancer Berenice, demands the hero's love, and orders his death once her deception is exposed. Egyptian women otherwise enter the story via the slave market, where the hero purchases the beautiful Marianne and her young brother.
