- The desert's people are mostly hazards: Mameluk raiders destroy the French camp, and Bedouin tribesmen hunt the stranded soldier after he steals their water, a frightened woman in a tent being his only encounter with an Arab woman. Only the nameless Arab on a camel who carries the dying man to safety breaks the pattern.
