Noble savage

Dignity granted on condition of primitiveness: characters admired for strength, loyalty, or innocence precisely because they are written as un-modern - closer to nature, simpler, childlike. It arrives as flattery and does the work of contempt, because the admiration depends on the character never being allowed a full interior life.
