History with the discoverer swapped out: the work states, as plain fact, that an invention, a science, or an institution began somewhere it didn't - algebra without al-Khwarizmi, optics without Ibn al-Haytham, medicine jumping from ancient Greece to the Renaissance with eight centuries left blank. Unlike a caricature it never has to show the people it wrongs; it simply writes them out of the record and hands their work to someone else. The tell is a lineage with a gap in it - and the same heirs standing at the end of it every time.
