- Tripoli's Arabs split between pirate villainy and palace treachery: corsairs menace American shipping while the reigning pasha's side poisons waterholes and offers his exiled brother half a kingdom to betray the Americans. The harem note comes from a European countess living with the exiled pasha, presumed by everyone to be his mistress and made to travel with the camp followers.
