- A rare romance between an Israeli soldier and Laila, a Palestinian schoolteacher, lute player, and peace activist, surrounded by humane Palestinian characters - her wheelchair-using father Mahmoud, who writes about coexistence, and Professor Mansour, who helps the couple flee. Militancy within her own family supplies the tragedy: a relative cuts Mansour's throat, and Laila is fatally shot in the crowd at his funeral.
