- The sheikh figure is Raisuli, a Berber chieftain introduced kidnapping an American woman and her children in a raid that kills her British friend; the film grants him honor, wit, and a code - he protects his captives and cuts down the brigands who abuse them - but his world remains one of raids, ransom, and the sword.
