Silent. Based on Francis Marion Crawford’s novel/play of the same name, this film was the first American feature produced in Italy. Two other versions were released: an earlier silent film in 1915 and MGM’s 1933 sound film with Clark Gable and Helen Hayes

  • The Arabs are a faceless desert menace: they attack the Italian expedition's camp, are reported to have massacred everyone, and hold the hero captive for two years - appearing only to ambush, imprison, and be escaped from.
