Tunisia serves as a squalid backdrop: begging children mob the hero in the souk while a French policeman tells him to guard his pockets, the heroine calls the country violent and the town dirty and corrupt, the Tunisian helper Aribi is described as a man who would steal the laces off your shoes and resell them to you, and cut phone lines are blamed on Bedouin harvesting the wire for bracelets.
