- Though set largely in Cairo and the Sahara, the film gives no Arab woman a name or a line; women appear as veiled figures in market backgrounds while every romance and rivalry belongs to Europeans passing through. The Bedouin who pull Almásy from the wreck are likewise nameless functionaries - healers and guides in service of the Western story.
