- Ancient Egypt is ruled by a corrupt, politically scheming priesthood, and the woman who dominates the story is the courtesan Nefer, who coldly strips the physician Sinuhe of his fortune and even his parents' tomb before discarding him - a ruin that drives his parents to suicide.
