- Palestinians appear chiefly as marauders: Salim's band mines a road hoping to blow up an Israeli bus when it carries more passengers, raids its own village, and executes a fellow Palestinian for working with Jewish police — villagers stepping past the body without prayer or burial. The sympathetic Palestinians, Salim's father and sister, are defined by sheltering the Israeli-aligned characters and finally taking up guns against Salim's men.
