A German deserter joins the rebellion of Moroccan leader Abdul Karim against French and Spanish colonial armies in a rare portrayal of Arabs as dignified freedom fighters who pray, cite the Prophet, and argue their right to self-rule. The leader's daughter Zeina, who weds the German in a Koran ceremony conducted by an imam, is no passive harem maiden: she fires cannon in battle, insists on her country's freedom, and mobilizes the rebellion's women.
