- Algeria's Arabs are framed through counter-insurgency: Lt. Ben Mahidi, the one Algerian among the French paratrooper heroes, deserts to lead FLN guerrillas and becomes the man his old comrades must hunt, while his sister Aicha, a rebel loyalist played by the European star Claudia Cardinale, doubles as the French captain's love interest.
