  • The heroine's promised land is a Palestine with no Palestinian characters in it; the one substantial Arab role, ship captain Ayoob, smuggles guns to Jewish Haganah fighters while his Dutch employer mocks him as a man "betraying his own people" who sold his soul. The Moroccan stopover adds a bellydancer caressing a giant snake, a beggar faking blindness to spy, and a Dutchman sneering at the amplified call to prayer.
