Palestinians in this saga of Swedish colonists are background figures — white-robed laborers, veiled women, beggars — until a brief nighttime souk scene in which two Palestinians mug the Swedish hero, beating him and stabbing him in the back so that he loses an eye; the Selma Lagerlöf novel the film adapts contains no such episode.
