- Prince Fazil is the desert noble as despot: back in Arabia he installs a harem of adorned maidens, orders a runaway servant beheaded with a pause for the prayer hour, and, mortally wounded, poisons his European wife with a kiss so she cannot outlive him. His homeland's customs figure as the tyranny his Parisian wife must escape.
