- Palestinian Arabs figure mainly as the peril ringing the Jewish protagonists: the kibbutz is named for a girl kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by Arabs, and partition is answered with Arab violence. The one warmly drawn Arab, the village leader Taha, is himself killed by Arab irregulars for siding with his Jewish friends.
