- The invading Almoravid leader Ben Yusuf is a veiled fanatic who dreams of Islamic world domination and berates Spain's emirs for living at peace with Christians. The film's Moors are either his menacing hordes or vassals who submit to the Christian hero, though the emir al-Mu'tamin is granted dignity, repaying El Cid's mercy with loyalty.
