- Anna is a Syrian immigrant waitress in New York's Syrian quarter, menaced by a criminal who preys on the coffee house where she works; her 'ascent' carries her out of the immigrant colony into education, American society, and an American fiance, a rise measured by the distance she puts between herself and her Arab world.
